New Delhi: The days have gotten shorter and the nights longer, it is evident that it’s officially the winter season. A change in season is often accompanied by the need to adapt to a lifestyle that is more appropriate to the season. Therefore, for the sake of one’s health and well-being, it is essential to be informed about the various challenges that this season might bring along.

Winter and health

Here are some common diseases that may emerge prominently over the winter season:

  1. Asthma: Winters can be troublesome for people suffering from respiratory problems such as asthma. This is due to the trigger and flare-ups caused by the cold, dry air that irritates the airways. Furthermore, increased indoor time also puts people at risk of allergen-induced flare-ups.
  2. Seasonal Affective Disorder: A change in season can significantly affect the mental health of a person and must not be neglected. Also known as SAD, the seasonal affective disorder can literally make people sad. Click here to read more about this condition.
  3. Flu: Winters are also known as the flu season therefore, the emergence of this viral respiratory condition during the season might not come as a shocker to most people. However, despite the widespread occurrence, a flu infection can be a source of extreme discomfort and distress. Commonly known as influenza, flu’s common symptoms may include body aches, fever, headache, stuffy nose, fatigue, and cough. Due to the increased indoor time during winters, it might not be easy to get sufficient vitamin D. This can cause a weakened immune system that increases the risk of contracting flu.
  4. Pneumonia: Respiratory problems take a huge blow during the winter season due to the increased incidence of contracting bacterial, viral, or fungal infections. Spreading of infections to the lungs can lead to pneumonia. Some common symptoms of this condition may include decreased appetite, fever, cough, chest pain, etc.
  5. Eczema: This is one of the most common skin conditions that can cause skin inflammation and itching and winters provide the ideal conditions for the flare-ups of this condition. Keeping the skin moisturized is a sure shot way to avoid eczema flare-ups. However, due to the cold and dry air, the skin is more prone to inflammation, cracking, drying, and itching.
