The implications of IoT on the Healthcare Industry

The implications of IoT on the Healthcare Industry

We live in a very technological world, and most things we do for work, leisure, and study are based on electronic devices. Any of these devices using a connection fall into the IoT category. IoT has implications in every industry. However, it poses many issues, especially IoT in healthcare industry. A good way to gain knowledge on present matters is to read reviews, which is why one can read a motosport com review should they be interested in motorsports products or if you are interested in vitamins, one can read a review based on that.

What is IoT?

IoT stands for the Internet of Things. It is widely used to describe objects with software processing abilities, sensors, and technologies to help them exchange and connect data with other systems. It uses the internet or other communication networks, like cellular towers, to transfer and connect with other systems and devices.

Some of the challenges IoT brings to the healthcare industry:

Most IoT devices are not protected properly and therefore do not have an end-to-end secure connection. Having no level of security and firewalls in place poses a security problem. When one provides information to a healthcare facility, the information provided is confidential; however, with most of the public completing forms online or emailing documents and healthcare practices working in the cloud, it is very easy for the data to be compromised as cybercriminals can easily hack the system and steal any sensitive information. Another challenge is that healthcare providers will up their security and put specific protocols and measures in place to protect the information. Still, the hospital fees will increase, which could be better for the patients. Furthermore, many medical devices are operated via IoT, so the information or device can be tampered with if someone hacks the system.

Another area for improvement with IoT is that data cannot be linked and processed effectively. In a hospital, time is of the essence in some cases, so it is imperative that information is transferred to where it needs to be efficiently, quickly, and safely. Only some trained professionals in healthcare facilities know how to program the devices to be linked to one another or how to deal with a potential threat. Having people available with limited knowledge may save time, as the company calls a professional. In addition, it may take someone with little knowledge in that field a while before they figure out something needs to be fixed, and then Hackers may have already leaked some confidential information. Lastly, reliable connectivity is an issue. If the connection dies down, then the information will not be able to be processed, but operations need to continue, so it poses a challenge to surgeons and nurses who need to monitor patients. They cannot operate, and a machine dies down or picks up faulty readings.

All in all, everything has advantages and disadvantages. However, IoT poses challenges that the Healthcare system is trying to overcome. So remember, next time you are at the doctor or the hospital, thank them for what they do, as a lot more goes on behind the scenes than one thinks!
